Two days after the Congress won 40 seats in a 68-member Himachal Pradesh State Assembly, the Congress leadership on Saturday named Suku 58 as the chief minister.
Previously, there was some speculation over who might hold the top post, with the name of Pratibha Singh, the wife of late CM Veerbhadra Singh, doing the rounds. As part of his campaign, Suku promised a clean and honest government and mentioned the need for employment generation, focusing on both existing government vacancies and private jobs.He said it was his responsibility to fulfil the promises made by the party to the people. We wanted to secure power, not nearly be in power. We want to change the system. Give me some time. We need to work hard and struggle to bring in a new system and new thinking.

His mother told reporters that Suku was more inclined toward continuing his education than working at such a young age.Suku was appointed chief of the state unit of the National Students Union of India, the Congress party student wing, in 1989. After being elected to the Vidhan Sabha as an MLA in 2003, he went on to lead the state unit of the Youth Congress, was twice elected as a concealer, and was then let the State Congress committee.Suku is the popular leader; he is believed to be close to Rahul Gandhi’s family, and Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were present at his own swearing-in ceremony on Sunday. He credits the late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi with giving him important positions earlier in his career. His temperament as Pradesh Congress Committee president was marked by his acrimonious relationship with the state’s most deferential leader, CM Vibhadra Singh.I was committed to the party’s ideology; it was all issue-based; there were issues on which I supported him, and there were issues on which I proposed him, as he told the Indian Express in an interview on May 13 of this year.Share your views in the comment section.
