The apex court on Thursday granted bail to Faruk, a convict in the Godhra train coach burning case of 2002.
    The incident happened in 2002. The Sabarmati Express trainu2019s coach was set on fire, and Faruk pelted stones to prevent the people from coming outside of the burning train. Coach S6 of the Sabarmati had 59 people, including kids and women, and was set on fire. This incident took the form of riots in Gujarat.
    The incident killed 59 people, and all the convicts were sent to life imprisonment.
    The bench that granted bail to the accused was led by Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.
    Solicistor General Tushar Mehta was representing the Gujarat government in this matter.
    Tushar Mehta told the bench that the crime was the most heinous. He said normally stone pelting is considered a minor crime, but the accused pelted stones on the people to prevent them from moving out of the train, which was set on fire.
    The Gujrat High Court dismissed the bail plea on October 9, 2017.
