These suicides have left the city in deep shock and prompted outrage over the below par living conditions and enormous academic pressure faced by the students.
Kota Police Superintendent Kesar Singh told IANS, Police teams are investigating the case. It is too early to say anything as the investigation is ongoing for the case. A post-mortem is being done and thereafter we shall make a thorough probe. Officials confirmed that the three students who killed themselves on Monday, December 12, two from Bihar and one from Madhya Pradesh, were all enrolled at Allen, the largest coaching institute in Rajasthan. The initial inquiry found that these kids were depressed and under the stress of their studies. Rumours are surrounding the kids of skipping classes and examinations among their friends, although the number of days the victims skipped coaching classes had not yet been made public.
But this is a larger problem that goes beyond the boundaries of Kota and the pressure cooker atmosphere created in coaching centres. The combination of a large population of the students with rising aspirations and an economy with shrinking opportunities has created a public health crisis that requires urgent attention. The current design of the education system makes inflexible. The need of the hour is to learn from past failures and to address the growing crisis and take urgent steps that involve everyone from students, parents, teachers, institutes to policy makers. What do you guys think is the major reason that even the happiest children turn out to be the most depressed?
