The variant is reported as BF.7, which is a variant of Omicron. 
    The first case of this variant was reported in Gujarat by Gujarat Biotechnology Research. 
    So far, Gujrat has reported 2 cases of the variant. The third case is from Odisha.  
    The Union Health Minister conducted a meeting to check on the surge of new variants.  
    On Wednesday, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya convened a meeting to discuss the precautions to be taken in India regarding the new variants that are emerging in various parts of the world. 

    In view of the rising cases of COVID-19 in some countries, we reviewed the situation with experts and officials today. COVID is not over yet. I have directed all concerned to be alert and strengthen surveillance. We are prepared to manage any situation, Mandaviya said in a tweet.  Along with other government representatives, the meeting was attended by the secretaries of health, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and Ayush, as well as Rajiv Bahl, director general of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Dr. V. K. Paul, member (health) of the NITI Aayog, and Dr. N. K. Arora, chairman of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI). 
    The world is seeing a COVID-wave-like situation once again. China, the US, Brazil, and South Korea have seen a spike in cases. 
    India should take the necessary steps but should not panic as India has achieved vaccination on a vast scale.
