The bacteria infects beehives and converts the larvae into a brown fluid which emits a foul smell. The beekeeper is then forced to burn such infected colonies. This is spreading largely in parts of the United States. The vaccine is added to the jelly that the queen bee consumes which provides it immunity from the disease on ingestion. A dead cell of the same bacterium is used in making the vaccine. When these bees hatch larvae, they are already immune to the disease.A US-based biotech company, Dalan Animal Health Inc., obtained a special permit or license from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to work on this technology and with some help from the team of University of Georgia, this vaccine has been developed and has gotten approval. With the success of this vaccine, they are hoping to find the cures for more bee related diseases. Many wildbee species are in alarming decline in the US and healthy bee colonies are routinely circulated in the country to aid pollination.
