Following its national executive meeting this week in Delhi, the BJP claimed that it would win every state. The objective has always been the maximum, and to get there, it has mobilised and employed all available tools and resources. It won’t be discouraged by the fact that the elections are held in three tiny states that are located distant from the political centre. The party must maintain its hegemonic position in the North-East. If there were a setback, it would be a blow to the party, which is why the opposition would strive to make up for it.
Tripura, the most significant of these states politically, will be a difficult test for the BJP. There are significant internal issues in the party, which was primarily made up of defectors. It had to appoint Biplab Deb’s successor as chief minister last year, and its relationships with its IPFT ally are tense. The CPM and the Congress might join forces, and they might bring in Tipra Motha, a new party that has acquired support recently. However, the Trinamool Congress, which has been active in the state, might not be a member of the Opposition coalition and could divide the anti-BJP vote. The burden of ensuring that there is no violence associated to elections falls squarely on the shoulders of the Election Commission.

The BJP’s partnership with the regional NPP, led by Meghalaya’s chief minister Conrad Sangma, is in jeopardy. Sangma might contest the elections alone. His opposition to some of the BJP’s initiatives, like as those regarding the Uniform Civil Code, has been made very plain. The BJP as a party might not stand to gain much from the polls in a state with a large Christian population. A potential electoral issue is the state’s boundary dispute with BJP-ruled Assam.
Additionally, the BJP and the local parties that make up Nagaland’s ruling coalition are not in a very favourable position. Even after many years, the Naga peace negotiations have not produced any results, and Frontier Nagaland’s aspiration for independence continues. The three state polls will get the nation ready for elections, but it is unclear what tone they will set.
