Ahmad Murtaza Abbasi was found guilty on Friday by the Anti-Terror Squad’s (ATS) Lucknow-based special court, some nine months after the security breach at Gorakhpur’s Gorakhnath Temple. The chemical engineer, age 31, who graduated from IIT-Mumbai, was charged with assaulting PAC workers who were stationed at the temple’s gate. As the temple’s top priest, Yogi Adityanath’s dwelling is located on the temple grounds.
He was found guilty by the court of special judge Vivekanand Saran Tripathi after they discovered strong evidence against him presented by the UP ATS. The court has set the following date, January 30, to determine whether to punish the accused in the case.
The media was informed by public prosecutor MK Singh that on April 3, 2022, Abbasi attempted to violate the perimeter security of the Gorakhnath Temple grounds. When challenged, he said Abbasi attacked PAC employee Anil Kumar Paswan at the temple gate and hurt him. Abbasi injured two Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) constables in the process, but he was captured after his attempt to enter the building was thwarted by other people present. He claimed Abbasi attempted to steal the gun as well.Since then, the UP ATS has been looking into the event, and on April 25, 2022, Abbasi was taken into custody to be questioned further. Interrogation revealed that Abbasi, whose family hails from Gorakhpur, earned his chemical engineering degree from the IIT in Mumbai in 2015 and went on to work for a multinational corporation while stationed in Jamnagar, Gujarat, for a considerable amount of time. He claimed that because Muneer Ahmad Abbasi, Abbasi’s father, worked as a legal counsel for a private company in Mumbai, both Abbasi’s schooling and upbringing took place there. What do you think of it?
