Bumrah has not played since September of last year due to a back injury sustained prior to the T20 World Cup. He was expected to make a comeback during India’s one-day international series against Sri Lanka, but he suffered another injury and had to withdraw from the squad at the last minute.
Bumrah was not named to the squad for the first two Tests against Australia, but captain Rohit Sharma is optimistic that he will be able to join the team for the remainder of the series.
According to Australia’s fast bowling legend Jeff Thomson, Bumrah may have to decide whether he wants to prioritize limited overs cricket or Tests in order to extend his career.
He explained that he understands players, particularly fast bowlers, needing to rest because they have to play all year in multiple formats, which was not the case in his heyday. There’s a lot of cricket. They compete all year. That is not what we did. We used to play seasons, especially during the summer.
We would spend our winters in England on occasion. It was a four and a half month tour. But, in general, we only played during the summer, so we could gradually ramp up to full strength after Christmas. Because I knew I’d be getting rest, Thomson, who took 200 wickets in 51 Tests between 1973 and 1985, explained on Revsportz.
You can’t do that now. To be around, you must pace yourself. That’s why they have so many backup bowlers and rest people. We didn’t take breaks in our day. If we took a break, someone else would take our place. It’s a matter of having to rest these days because it’s a year-round job.
Thomson admitted that playing Test cricket would have been difficult for him because shorter formats can help him extend his career while earning a good living.
Well, (Bumrah) needs to decide whether he wants to play short formats, Test matches, or both. If I were playing now, it would be extremely difficult for me to play Test matches. Especially since you get so much money in the short version of the game, which only increases your longevity. We didn’t have to think about money back then because there wasn’t any.
source: Xtra TimeIt’s now a multibillion-dollar industry. The only person who will look after you is you. So you have to figure out how long I’m going to play for and how I’m going to manage it because no one else will. In terms of workload, I believe you must be more astute these days, and keep an eye on what you have to play.
If you’re good enough, they’ll pick you anyway, so you should be able to pull the strings, he explained. Thomson stated that regardless of Bumrah’s decision, his standing as a great bowler is based on the fact that he will draw crowds regardless of the format he plays in.
I believe it is decided by the crowd. They are well aware of his abilities. It’s a shame he doesn’t want to play Test cricket, but if he plays in a T20, they’ll come to watch him. What I’m saying is that if a guy limits himself to that, he’ll be playing for longer, he said.
