Mukesh Sinha, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, was also present. KIWG has grown over the course of three editions, the first in 2020 and the second in 2021. This edition will feature 1500 athletes from 29 states and union territories competing in 11 disciplines, up from around 1000 athletes and seven sports in previous editions.
KIWG is a large platform for aspiring athletes who want to participate in winter sports and advance to the next level, Thakur said. They can dream big, use this platform to get into a SAI academy and avail various schemes and programmes which the government has to reach the elite stage.
India had only one representative in the 2022 Winter Olympics, Arif Khan, and he happens to be from this place. There is a lot of potential for winter sports here, and we will have more athletes qualifying for the Winter Olympics starting next year.
Thakur stated that the government has given a significant boost to sport in the region over the last few years, and the results can now be seen.
The youth here have progressed from throwing stones to participating in various sports such as cricket, wushu, judo, and winter sports. The government wants to encourage sporting activities, and I can assure you that we will provide the best facilities to the athletes, whether it is coaching, finances, or infrastructure.
The minister also announced the establishment of 40 Khelo India centers throughout Jammu and Kashmir. The Union government will provide these district centers with coaching and sports science expertise each year, he said. The minister also stated that a Winter Sports Centre of Excellence would be established here. Participants are ecstatic.

I can’t wait to compete here, said Gaurav Sharma of Delhi, who will compete in ice stock, which is similar to curling.
