The victory moves City ahead of Arsenal on goal difference, though the Gunners still have a game in hand. More importantly, it maintained a psychological advantage over its title rival, as City has now defeated Arsenal in 11 consecutive league games.
We can all agree that (Arsenal) has been the best team this season, so coming to their stadium and playing against them will be difficult. Haaland said. But we played an incredible game, got three crucial points, and we’re back in it.
In a game that lived up to its billing as the biggest Premier League match of the season so far, City took the lead in the 24th minute when Kevin de Bruyne capitalized on a defensive error, before Bukayo Saka equalized from the penalty spot in the 42nd.
Arsenal made a strong start but conceded the lead after City goalkeeper Ederson booted the ball upfield. Right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu attempted to pass the ball back to Aaron Ramsdale, but it was intercepted by De Bruyne, who curled a lob over the onrushing goalkeeper and into the empty net.
I haven’t seen Tomiyasu make that pass back in seven years, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said.
Eddie Nketiah had missed the best chance of the game minutes earlier when Oleksandr Zinchenko picked him out in the box with a cross, but the striker headed wide.
But Arsenal persisted, and the pressure paid off when the hosts were awarded a penalty for a foul by Ederson on Eddie Nketiah as the striker attempted to shoot from a difficult angle. After sending Ederson the wrong way, Saka calmly rolled the spot kick into the left corner.
After the break, City improved and thought it had a penalty when Gabriel clumsily pulled down Haaland in the area, but the decision was overturned for offside on the Norway striker.
City retook the lead, however, after another error by Gabriel, who turned the ball over in his own half. The visitors quickly countered, with Ilkay Gundogan squaring the ball for Grealish, who beat Ramsdale with a low shot that deflected off Tomiyasu.
Haaland, who had a knock in the previous game against Aston Villa on Sunday, scored his 26th league goal of the season when De Bruyne cut the ball back for the striker, who took one touch before slotting a shot into the far corner.
Later on, Nketiah sent another header wide, but that was the closest Arsenal came to equalizing.
They were much better than us in the first half. We were much better in the second half, Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, stated. We said at halftime that we weren’t playing, just defending because they were so good, but we needed to be more active, and the second half was fantastic.
Arsenal has now gone three league games without a win, losing two of them, after winning 16 of the first 19 games of the season. The Gunners have scored more points in those three games (8) than they did in the previous 19 games combined (7).
Arteta said the defeat was largely self-inflicted.
It was an incredible battle between two teams, and we just gave them the goals, absolutely gave them the goals, and they’re going to destroy you against this team, Arteta stated. On the other hand, we had three big, big chances that we didn’t capitalize on. That was the distinction.
The game was originally scheduled for October but was postponed due to a schedule rescheduling following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
