The second Test between England and Sri Lanka kicked off today, with Sri Lanka winning the toss and opting to field first at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street. The decision to bowl seemed strategic, aiming to exploit the early morning conditions that traditionally favor seam and swing in England. England’s openers, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, took to the crease under overcast skies, facing a disciplined Sri Lankan bowling attack.

Crawley started aggressively, hitting boundaries early to put pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers. However, Sri Lanka’s pacers, led by Asitha Fernando and Kasun Rajitha, found movement off the pitch, challenging the English batsmen with probing lines and lengths. Duckett struggled to get going and was the first to fall, edging a delivery from Rajitha to the slips, departing for a modest score

Joe Root joined Crawley at the crease, bringing calmness to England’s innings. Root’s form has been pivotal for England throughout the series, and he quickly settled in, rotating the strike and finding gaps with ease. Crawley continued to play his shots, reaching a well-deserved half-century, showcasing a mix of crisp drives and powerful pulls.

However, just as England looked to gain momentum, Crawley fell to a sharp catch at gully off Prabath Jayasuriya’s bowling, leaving England two down. Sri Lanka continued to maintain tight lines, keeping England’s run rate in check. The English middle order, featuring Ollie Pope and Harry Brook, will need to build on the foundation laid by Crawley and Root to put up a competitive first-innings total.

As the day progresses, England will be keen to avoid losing quick wickets and look to post a solid score on a pitch that seems to be easing out. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will aim to make further inroads and keep the pressure on England’s batsmen as Day 1 unfolds.
