Nine passengers were killed in Reasi when terrorists attacked the bus they were riding on. Following the driver’s fatal shooting, the passengers perished when the careening bus plunged into a ravine. Because of the collapse, many people on the bus survived, albeit with injuries.
It is just too horrible to imagine what may have happened if the bus had continued on and was left at the mercy of the assailants. The fact that this attack occurred during the swearing-in ceremony for Narendra Modi and his new cabinet raises the possibility that the perpetrators were trying to refute the government’s assertion that peace had been restored in Jammu and Kashmir.

Over the next two days, three more events happened in fast succession. In Doda, in the Chenab Valley of Jammu, terrorists opened fire at two separate checkpoints, wounding multiple security officers. The security personnel in Kathua were informed by the locals about the existence of terrorists in the region. The following gunfight resulted in the death of a CRPF jawan.Terrorists started targeting the Jammu region in 2021, and these acts are part of a pattern that they started.
Twenty troops lost their lives in an attack on military trucks in the Poonch-Rajouri region last year. But the congratulations were tone deaf, notably from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his elder brother, former PM Nawaz Sharif, who made them just one day after the attacks in Reasi. The latter mentioned “hatred with hope” in his remarks. Modi responded by highlighting the importance of security and peace.
According to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, the government’s priority will be “finding a solution” to the “issue of years-old cross-border terrorism”. Modi, who is less powerful politically in his third term, would like to show the people back home that he is unwavering in his fight against terrorism. It is safe to presume that any intended outreach to Pakistan has been abandoned for the time being.
