The BJP has kept Tripura, will remain a member of the current coalition in Nagaland, and is in negotiations to establish the government in Meghalaya with its former ally, the National People’s Party (NPP).
Five seats were gained by the Congress in Meghalaya, three in Tripura, and none in Nagaland. The grand old party could win a meagre eight of the 180 seats up for election across three states.

The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) from Erode East in Tamil Nadu was also defeated by the Congress. Nonetheless, the victory of its candidate EVKS Elangovan may be primarily attributed to the DMK, which is currently in power, and Chief Minister MK Stalin, for whom the byelection was a contest for political capital.
As the Congress campaigned for the remaining 13 seats, the CPI(M) contested 47. The Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), a BJP ally, ran candidates in six of the 55 seats that were up for election.
In contrast, the BJP President JP Nadda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and a dozen Union ministers actively supported the party’s candidates. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam and the BJP’s point man for the region’s three states, conducted considerable campaigning there.

In announcing the BJP’s stunning victories in the three states, Modi claimed that the outcomes demonstrated the public’s complete faith in democracy and its institutions. On the other hand, Kharge argued that the outcomes in the area were consistent with its trend of supporting the Union government.
Now that the Northeast has been completed, the focus is on Karnataka, where assembly elections are scheduled for May. Before the semi-finals in November-December, when Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Mizoram hold elections, Karnataka is a critical state for both the governing BJP and the Congress. Three months prior to the big finale, Lok Sabha elections, these elections will take place. It is indeed a hectic election season ahead.
