Argentina took a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to Messi’s penalty kick, but France responded in kind in the second half, with Mbappe scoring a brace to tie the game at 2-2 at the end of regulation time.
Messi appeared to have sealed Argentina’s victory in extra time, but Mbappe scored his third goal of the night to tie the game at 3-3 and force a tie-break. Argentina eventually won the shootout 4-2 to win their third World Cup title u2013 1978, 1986, and 2022.
