Artificial Intelligence in Journalism: Where is Media Headed?

The meaning and ecology of news are, however, being reconsidered in light of the development of artificial intelligence. The evolution of technology has outpaced journalism’s transition from a solitary profession to a participatory and multiple realm, from the printing press to the metaverse.

For instance, audiences are becoming more interested in transmedia storytelling, which is generating thoughtful discussion across the world. However, the over-weaponization of AI may be problematic for the ecosystem of news media.
Journalism has always been heavily reliant on technology. The telegraph, telephone, radio, television, and more recently, blockchain, the metaverse, and artificial intelligence (AI) have changed the nature and pace of the profession. Therefore, an examination of journalism’s history and current state would be lacking without a consideration of communication technologies.
The news media is beginning to be impacted by AI in a number of ways. Data journalism is thriving thanks to AI tools. Infographics, data visualisation, interactive visualisation, and computer-assisted reporting are all being used more and more in newsrooms. Computational journalism is establishing new trends and ushering in paradigm shifts through storytelling.
The introduction and spread of communication technology have also resulted in the prioritising of citizen journalism, or participatory journalism. User-generated content is also driving inclusive development and social transformation. It is now possible to use AI to revolutionise journalism for growth and change. Upward communication has been sparked and accelerated by AI, which is a crucial condition for participatory journalism. 
Activism and journalism are still interwoven. The widespread use of technologies by activists and non-governmental organisations, especially AI tools, has led to an increase in media activism. Technology-enabled emancipatory journalism supports policy reforms and lobbying campaigns.
But there are ethical issues with the AI revolution in journalism. This technology will reduce the amount of staff in newsrooms. Existing journalists will be required to possess knowledge of data science, statistics, designing, and other presentation techniques. The concepts of Good AI and Bad AI have also been developed in the news media as a result of excessive and inappropriate use of AI tools. When it comes to the application of AI in the production, delivery, and consumption of news, no one is addressing the disparity between the Global South and the Global North.The dominant topic of conversation in newsrooms continues to be man vs. machine.
