The BJP has pledged to put the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) into effect since taking office in Karnataka in 2019. This follows the collapse of the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) administration in the state in 2019. According to the party, the UCC will provide gender equity and equal rights for Muslim women. This is important in a state where Muslims make up roughly 13% of the electorate.

The BJP is eager to split the community vote, to the cost of its main competitors, despite the Supreme Court’s decision to review the government’s move to eliminate the 4% OBC quota for Muslims.
The election platforms of the BJP and the Congress have a lot of goodies in common. Despite Prime Minister Modi’s declared contempt for the revdi culture, the BJP has pledged to give every BPL family three free cooking gas cylinders, one for each of the festivals of Yugadi, Ganesh Chaturthi, and Diwali.
The party has also declared that it will introduce the Poshane programme, under which each BPL household will receive monthly ration kits including 5 kg of Sri Anna Siri Dhanya (millets) and half a litre of Nandini milk each day.
The promises made by the Congress include free transport for women on government-run buses, Rs 2,000 in monthly support for each woman who is the family’s head, 200 free energy units for all families and a handout for unemployed graduates and diploma holders in the 18u201325 age range. The rural community and women’s self-help organisations are the main targets of the JD (Secular) agenda.

The BJP has pledged to establish a state wing to combat religious terrorism and fundamentalism, and the Congress has designated the Sangh Parivar organisation Bajrang Dal with a promise to take firm and decisive action against individuals and organisations spreading hatred among communities due to the sensitive nature of religion in Karnataka.Overall, an intriguing election is expected, with polarisation and populism playing major roles.
