For the flag-hoisting, Gandhi was accompanied by his sister, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, as well as party leaders from the Union Territory. The flag unfurling had been scheduled for Monday but had to be done a day sooner, according to Jairam Ramesh, general secretary and communications officer for the All India Congress Committee.

All roads inside a one-kilometer radius leading to Lal Chowk had been closed off as of Saturday night, ensuring the highest level of security for the 10-minute event. At all entry points, barricades and concertina wires were placed along with a significant deployment of security officers.As part of the security drill for the flag unfurling by the former Congress president, shops, businesses, and the weekly flea market were closed.

Launched on September 7 last year at Kanyakumari, the Bharat Jodo Yatra has travelled through 12 states and two Union Territories: Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.
On Friday, the yatra was cancelled for the day in Anantnag district after the party alleged security lapse, saying police arrangements by the Jammu and Kashmir administration u201ccompletely collapsedu201d. The administration had claimed that the demand placed on security resources by the larger-than-expected crowd size may have given the appearance that there were insufficient security measures in place during the Rahul Gandhi-led march.
On Saturday, the march resumed in Awantipora in the Pulwama district, with Gandhi participating along with PDP Chair Mehbooba Mufti, her daughter Iltija Mufti, and a sizable contingent of workers. Priyanka Gandhi also joined her brother in the yatra later.
