In a recent revelation at the third edition of SCREEN LIVE, Bollywood actor Bobby Deol shared the fascinating backstory behind his viral dance to the song “Jamal Kudu” from the film “Animal.” The dance, which has taken social media by storm, was initially met with skepticism by the film’s director, Sandeep Reddy Vanga.

During the event, Bobby Deol, alongside his elder brother and actor-politician Sunny Deol, discussed various aspects of their lives and careers. Bobby Deol, who plays the character Abrar Haque in “Animal,” recounted the moment he was asked to perform the dance. “Sandeep narrated the scene to me and said, ‘This is your wedding and you have to dance.’ I replied, ‘I cannot dance with a choreographer,’ and I started dancing. Sandeep immediately said, ‘Cut, I don’t want my character to look like Bobby Deol, I want it to look like Abrar,'” Bobby shared.

Feeling unsure about how to proceed, Bobby turned to his co-star Saurabh Sachdeva, who played his brother in the film. “I asked him, ‘How would you dance?’ and he started dancing. Suddenly, all these memories from my childhood started flooding back,” Bobby explained. He then decided to incorporate a traditional dance style he had seen during his summer and winter holidays in Punjab, where men would dance with glasses and bottles on their heads.
The result was the iconic “Jamal Kudu” dance, which Bobby performed with a glass on his head, capturing the essence of the character Abrar. “I had no idea my style of dancing would become so popular. I just put the glass on my head and started dancing, and the next thing I know, it went viral,” Bobby said, expressing his amazement at the dance’s reception.
Despite the dance’s eventual success, Bobby revealed that Sandeep Reddy Vanga was initially not pleased with his style. “Sandeep wanted Abrar to look different from me, and he didn’t like my initial attempts. But I guess sometimes you just have to trust your instincts and go with the flow,” Bobby added.
The song “Jamal Kudu” itself is a reimagined version of a popular Iranian song called “Jamaal Jamaaloo,” originally sung by the Shirazi Choir of the Kharazemi Girls High School in the 1950s. The lyrics, which loosely translate to “Oh! The black-eyed beauty, don’t break my heart with your brutality,” have resonated with audiences worldwide1.
Bobby Deol’s journey in Bollywood has been a rollercoaster ride, with highs and lows. Born as Vijay Singh Deol, he first appeared as a child artist in the 1977 film “Dharam Veer,” headlined by his father Dharmendra. Bobby made his debut as a lead actor in 1995 with “Barsaat,” which was a superhit at the box office2. Despite some major successes, he also faced setbacks, including the commercial failure of “Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya” with Aishwarya Rai. However, his recent role in “Animal” has marked a significant turning point in his career.
As Bobby Deol continues to ride the wave of his newfound popularity, fans eagerly await his next project, hoping to see more of his unique dance moves and acting prowess.
