The status of the humanities and social sciences in both nations is now deeply alarming. In contrast, India, which has a rapidly growing young population and a historically State-sponsored higher education system with affordable tuition, has a significant quality control issue.
Source: Business StandardThe relatively recent advent of private institutions has, for the most part, brought high tuition to the table without appreciably boosting quality, as most of them, save a few exceptions, are unrelentingly profit-seeking companies. Extremely uneven and inconsistent research cultures and pedagogical consciousness generate education of indifferent quality, particularly as one gets beyond the big cities.
Therefore, the idea of foreign universities coming to India initially seems like a win-win situation. The easing of the ban on foreign branch campuses in India, which was first proposed in the new National Education Policy released in 2020, gives Indian students the chance to access international quality while also giving Western universities access to India’s sizable higher education market.
Everybody who is familiar with the current political scene in India is aware that the country’s majoritarian intolerance of liberal political ideologies has already begun to significantly influence u2014 or completely demolish u2014 the country’s public higher education system.
Source: Abhijit ChavdaWith quasi-fictional curricula built on the foundations of ancient Hindu science, even the venerable Indian Institutes of Technology have been forced to water down their scientific and technological offerings. Yet as a result of criticism of the administration, freedoms have been severely curtailed at public universities; in order to maintain their good standing with the government, many private institutions have followed suit.
Leading universities in the West have relied heavily on liberal ideas, but believing that branch campuses in modern India will be able to openly practise it is practically an act of misplaced optimism.
