Following the publication of the damning report, the government informed the Lok Sabha on Friday that 210 hospitals had had their accreditation terminated and that 188 others had had their licences suspended for engaging in activities that were against the rules established by the National Health Authority (NHA) or the state health authority.
The National Anti-Fraud Unit of the NHA is charged with the identification, deterrence, and prevention of fraud and abuse under AB-PMJAY, but the audit results cast doubt on the effectiveness of the unit.

The BJP-led government, which has consistently underlined its commitment to eradicate corruption, is embarrassed by the CAG findings. It is clear that fraudulent or ineligible recipients are eroding this country’s top social programme, which serves almost 55 crore people. A thorough inquiry is urgently required to discover the connections between hospital employees, middlemen, and government figures.
The gaps must be closed immediately; else, PM Modi’s famous pledge, Na khaoonga na khaane doonga, which sums up his campaign against corruption, would suffer a serious setback just before the crucial Lok Sabha elections.
