It’s clear from the devious ambush that the Naxalites have no qualms about killing the very tribal people whose rights they claim to be fighting for when an IED with an estimated 40 kg of explosives exploded. Many tribesmen are assisting the authorities in containing the threat because they are finally able to see through the militants’ evil plans. The Naxalites are turning to desperate measures to assert their presence as a result of this trend, which has alarmed them.

    The most recent incident is a blow for the Centre, which has been assisting states like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra that are struggling with Left Wing Extremism (LWE). The National Policy and Action Plan on LWE, which was approved in 2015, envisions a multifaceted strategy that includes development interventions, security-related measures, and defending local people’ rights and entitlements. 
    The Home Ministry reports that there have been 77% fewer LWE violence events in the nation overall, from 2,213 in 2010 to 509 in 2021. During this time, fewer civilians and security personnel lost their livesu2014an 85 percent decrease.
    This encouraging result shows that the government’s citizen-centric initiativesu2014expanding the road network, enhancing telecommunication access, developing residents’ skills, and offering better financial services to the peopleu2014are paying off in LWE-affected states.

    However, as the unfortunate Dantewada episode painfully demonstrated, there is no room for complacency. As there is a chance of additional violence leading up to the Assembly elections later this year, Chhattisgarh, which last had such a significant attack in April 2021, must increase vigilance. It can be extremely beneficial to ensure that the local tribal population participates more actively in the anti-Naxal effort.
