AIME-23, which aims to promote maritime cooperation and enhance trust, friendship and confidence among the fleets of India, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Brunei, has clearly offended China. Beijing had responded angrily to the India-US military exercise that had taken place in Uttarakhand close to the LAC the previous year, stating that it had broken the spirit of the border agreements that had been made with India.
China has a dismal track record of upholding these pacts. A fortnight ago, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh made it clear to his Chinese colleague Gen. Li Shangfu that China’s violations of the existing border agreements had completely undermined the foundation of their bilateral relations.

The most recent provocative action by China occurred when Pakistan’s naval commander Amjad Khan Niazi was visiting Beijing. China is providing Islamabad with unwavering assistance for its navy modernization plan. In addition to four contemporary naval frigates, Pakistan will receive eight Chinese submarines. Niazi was advised by Gen Li that the two ‘all-weather pals’ should work together to protect their security interests. India thus confronts a variety of threats from adversarial neighbours. Increasing military capability and being well-prepared for any mishap are crucial for New Delhi.
