A runway at Berlin’s Brandenburg Airport was temporarily closed and flights were delayed as a result of climate protesters breaking onto the tarmac and sticking themselves to it. After activists gained unauthorized access, some of whom had taped themselves to the ground, Berlin police reported that they came across many people in a location that was off-limits to the public.Video Courtesy: Global NewsThe Last Generation environmental group claims that a 70-year-old man was among those involved. Last Generation activists were reportedly observed riding bicycles across the shunting area, which stopped all air traffic. Members of the group can be seen on video footage scaling a wire fence that had been cut in order to get access to the runway. The group demanded that both the general public and the government stop flying and stop funding it. In a statement, Last Generation said: The plane is not a method of transportation for common people. Around 80% of people have never taken a flight. One percent of wealthy people are in charge of around half of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with flights. The airport said that after being forced to close its runways, flights were resumed with some delays. The activists reached the airport from two locations in the north and south, according to a representative for the airport, and police had already detained them. They said that they were unable to estimate the number of impacted flights. Some aircraft that were initially en route to the airport changed course, according to the flight tracking website FlightRadar24.Judge Michael Hassemer of the Rhineland-Palatinate Constitutional Court stated that he thought the opposition was reasonable.  Judge Michael Hassemer of the Rhineland-Palatinate Constitutional Court stated that he believed the climatic emergency justified the opposition of the Last Generation. The consequences for mankind of not taking climate protection measures are in any event so significant that legal limitations resulting from the protest are justified to some part by emergency and are therefore permissible, he said.By 5 p.m. GMT, 13 aircraft had been diverted to airports in the eastern state of Saxony, according to the RBB broadcaster, which cited the Dresden and Leipzig airports’ operating business, Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG. The latest demonstration by German environmentalists called on the government to increase the availability of inexpensive train travel.
