The challenge for India is made more difficult by Mr. Adani’s allegedly close friendship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, under whose leadership he rose from being a prominent businessman to briefly being the second-richest person on the planet while serving as Gujarat’s chief minister and then as the head of the country.

Because of this connection, Mr. Modi reportedly travelled on Mr. Adani’s private jets and his government allegedly granted the industrialist’s companies special exemptions, there are valid concerns about Mr. Adani’s company all over the world. After all, Mr. Adani has frequently travelled with Mr. Modi abroad as a prominent member of his group. Yet up to this point, Mr. Modi’s staff has handled the challenge of diplomacy quite poorly. The dispute, which has caused Mr. Adani’s wealth to drop to a third of what it was at the beginning of the year, has, in general, prompted two types of responses abroad.
Israel has stated that it is eager to maintain that connection, despite the fact that Mr. Adani only recently purchased the Haifa port and expressed interest in additional projects. Regulators in the UK and Australia, on the other hand, have stated that they will carefully examine the charges against Mr. Adani, while in the US, billionaire philanthropist George Soros has stated that he thinks Mr. Adani’s problems may also have an impact on Mr. Modi’s political future.

Ministers have resorted to conspiracy theories, accusing detractors of attempting to bring down the prime minister rather than working to disassociate Mr. Modi from Mr. Adani. Their tense reactions have only helped to strengthen the notion that Mr. Adani’s rise is a result of his connections to Mr. Modi. Diplomatically, that is dangerous for India.
The Modi administration must make it plain to foreign allies that how they respond to the accusations won’t have an impact on India’s bilateral relations. It must protect the nation’s economy from any negative consequences of the Adani scandal.
