The party said on Friday that the department had frozen its primary bank accounts, which had a negative impact on its political activity because it was unable to use the money it had raised through crowdfunding or pay salaries.

The Congress claims that the government acted harshly on “flimsy grounds”—the late filing of the 2018–19 I-T return. The party filed an appeal with the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, and the tribunal granted permission to run the accounts temporarily with a lien rider until a follow-up hearing is scheduled for next week.

The biggest opposition party in the nation is still the Congress, despite a string of electoral failures in recent years. Any attempts to interfere with its regular operations are inappropriate. There is an obvious partisan bent to the authorities’ seeming overzealousness.

The party’s Madhya Pradesh chapter said earlier this week that some Congress leaders had received notifications from the IT department intended to scare them in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections. These leaders were allegedly subpoenaed in relation to an April 2019 I-T raid that took place in Bhopal. The state unit also questioned the choice to summon them to New Delhi rather than the department’s regional offices.

The opposition has often accused the NDA administration of targeting political rivals with the help of central agencies like the CBI, Enforcement Directorate, and IT department. There is fear that in the upcoming days and weeks, there would be more “politically motivated” searches, raids, and IT surveys in an attempt to intimidate opposition leaders into joining the BJP. It is the responsibility of the administration, which was dealt a setback on Thursday when the Supreme Court ruled that the electoral bond program was unlawful, to refute the escalating perception that it is sending its enemies undercover in an attempt to financially and politically destabilise them.
