Delhi’s air quality has been categorized as “severe” for the first time this season, as pollution levels in the capital city have reached alarming heights. The National Air Quality Index (AQI) reported a significant deterioration in air quality, with particulate matter (PM2.5) levels soaring well beyond safe limits. The severe category signifies a major health risk, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

The primary factors contributing to this worsening air quality include a combination of stubble burning in neighboring states, vehicular emissions, construction dust, and unfavorable weather conditions. The seasonal rise in crop-burning activities in Punjab and Haryana has been a significant contributor, releasing large amounts of smoke and particulate matter into the atmosphere. Additionally, the dip in temperatures and the phenomenon of temperature inversion, where a layer of warm air traps pollutants close to the ground, has exacerbated the problem.

The severe air quality poses serious health risks, with experts warning that prolonged exposure can lead to respiratory issues, aggravate existing heart and lung conditions, and even cause long-term damage to the immune system. The city’s hospitals have already reported a rise in cases of respiratory distress, and health authorities have advised people to limit outdoor activities and wear N95 masks for protection.

The Delhi government has responded by implementing measures such as shutting down construction activities, halting the operation of coal-based power plants, and encouraging the use of public transport to reduce emissions. However, the effectiveness of these steps is still uncertain, and experts have emphasized the need for long-term solutions to combat the city’s air pollution problem. Immediate action, including stricter regulations on stubble burning and industrial emissions, will be crucial in improving the city’s air quality.
