Many of those moments have been witnessed by India’s legendary captain, MS Dhoni. In fact, he served as a pacifier on several occasions, most notably when Gautam Gambhir and Kamran Akmal were spared during the drinks break during the 2010 Asia Cup. Dhoni was the one who pulled the left-handed Indian opener away from the brawl.
Dhoni had to step in again during an India-Pakistan match at the Adelaide Oval in Australia during the 2015 ODI World Cup. It was a match between India’s vice captain at the time, Virat Kohli, and Pakistan pacer Sohail Khan. According to the latter, Kohli started the verbal war.
Sohail stated that it occurred when he came out to bat during Pakistan’s 301-run chase. When Sohail entered the center, India was leading by two wickets and on the verge of another victory over their arch-rivals. The right-arm pacer claimed that Kohli approached him and said, Aap cricket mein abhi aaye hain. And itni baatein karte ho (You’ve just arrived, and you’re already talking a lot)
Interestingly, Sohail was the one who dismissed Kohli after his century, triggering a late collapse in the Indian batting line-up that prevented them from going past 220, which seemed inevitable at one point.
I used to play Test cricket. In 2006-07, I participated in Test matches. Then, in between, I had a knee problem that kept me from working. ‘Beta jab tu Under-19 khel raha tha na, tera baap Test cricketer tha,’ I said (Son, when you were playing Under-19 for India, your father [referring to himself] was a Test player). I said it that way, Sohail said on the Nadir Ali Podcast.
The lanky pacer, who had taken five wickets in that game, said the captains of the teams, Dhoni and Misbah-ul-Haq, then stepped in to put out the fire.
Then, as you can see, Misbah stepped in and became enraged at me. He asked me to remain silent. MS Dhoni then arrived and told Kohli, ‘Side pe ho ja, ye purana chawal hai, tu nahi jaanta isko. (Slow down. He’s been around for quite some time. You’ve never met him). Kohli then went and stood in one of the corners, he continued.
India went on to win the Pool B match by a score of 76 runs. In the semi-final, they were defeated by eventual champions and hosts Australia. Pakistan, on the other hand, did not make it to the semi-finals.
