He referred to social media followers as the fake thing in the country and urged people to recognise important, even minor, contributions. It started with him talking about his politics and how he doesn’t want to create a brand, and when asked about brand creation in Indian cricket, he opened up in great detail.
When Kohli got a hundred and there was this young guy from Meerut [Bhuvneshwar Kumar] who also got five wickets, no one bothered to talk about him. This was extremely unfortunate. During that commentary stint, I was the only one who said that. He bowled four overs and took five wickets, which I don’t think anyone is aware of.
But Kohli scores a century, and there are celebrations all over the country. India must break free from hero worship. It doesn’t matter if it’s Indian cricket, politics, or Delhi cricket. We must stop idolizing heroes. The only thing we need to worship is Indian cricket, or even Delhi or India.
Who made that? It is the result of two factors. First, social media followers, which are probably the most fabricated thing in this country because you are judged based on the number of followers you have. That is what gives rise to a brand.
Second, by the news media and broadcasters. When you keep talking about the same person day after day, it eventually becomes a brand. That was the case in 1983. Why begin with Dhoni? They do not rule Indian cricket, and they should not rule it. The 15 people sitting in that dressing room should rule Indian cricket.
What are your thoughts on the subject? Is Gautam Gambhir correct?
