But when the Center extended the Delimitation Commission’s term by a year in March 2021, the N-E states were cut off from its authority and the panel was instructed to redraft only the Jammu and Kashmir constituencies.
    Since then, that exercise has been finished. The Delimitation Commission proposed seven additional constituencies in May of this year when it finalised its decision for Jammu and Kashmir, bringing the total number of seats in the Union Territory up from 83 to 90.The process of drawing the boundaries of Assam’s Assembly and Parliamentary seats has started, according to the Election Commission of India.

On the basis of the 1971 Census, Assam’s seats were last redrawn in 1976.The population of Assam was 1.46 crore in 1971. It rose to 2.66 crore in 2001 and to 3.12 crore in 2011.The EC also issued a directive prohibiting the establishment of new administrative units in the state beginning on January 1 of the following year and continuing until the state’s delimitation exercise is complete.There are currently 126 Assembly and 14 Lok Sabha districts in Assam. It stated that the Ministry of Law and Justice’s request led to the state’s delimitation exercise being carried out.As mandated under Article 170 of the Constitution, census figures (2001) shall be used for the purpose of readjustment of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies in the State. Reservation of seats for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes will be provided as per Articles 330 & 332 of the Constitution of India, the EC said.The Commission will design and finalise its own guidelines and methodology for the purpose of delimiting the constituencies. During the delimitation exercise, the Commission will keep in mind the physical features, existing boundaries of administrative units, facility of communication, public convenience and as far as practicable, the constituencies will be kept as geographically compact areas, it said.The Commission will publish its finalised draught proposal for the delineation of Assam’s electoral districts in the Central and State Gazettes after which the general public will be invited to submit comments or objections.How will it impact state politics?
