Conversely, he continued, the horrific terror attacks do not excuse the collective punishment inflicted on the Palestinian people. There have been repeated requests for unconditional humanitarian aid and an instant cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, but no action has been taken.

    The humanitarian situation in Gaza will only worsen as Israel gets ready for the next round of its conflict. It is an unfathomably sad event. There is no denying Israel’s right to self-defence. But when Israel bombs civilians, shuts off vital supplies, and prevents them from accessing relief, does it not do so in violation of international humanitarian law under the guise of fighting Hamas? 
    When Israel’s actions cause children and other innocent civilians unimaginable suffering, how does that further Israel’s cause? The likelihood of an enduring resolution to the Israel-Palestine issue is dwindling daily. There could be serious repercussions from the ceaseless slaughter that extend far beyond West Asia.

    It is best to avoid becoming too involved in identity politics given the geopolitical character of the war. Regardless of the religion people practise, there are only losers in this never-ending conflict. India should support Israel during this difficult time. Reiterating support for a two-state solution and defending Palestinian rights are equally crucial. The world’s attention needs to be directed toward putting a stop to Gaza’s suffering right now. India needs to advocate for the reduction of suffering for civilians and the facilitation of captive releases by using its good offices.
