England cricketer Sam Billings has revealed that he recently underwent surgery to remove a skin cancer spot from his shoulder. The 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman, who plays for Kent in domestic cricket, said that he discovered the spot during a routine check-up and immediately took action to have it removed.
Billings revealed the news on his Instagram account, saying, Earlier this year I had a small mole on my shoulder, which turned out to be a Basal Cell Carcinoma. I had it removed by a skin specialist who said that we were very lucky to have caught it early.

Basal Cell Carcinoma is a common type of skin cancer that typically appears on the face, neck, and other sun-exposed areas of the body. It is usually slow-growing and rarely spreads to other parts of the body, but it can cause local tissue destruction if left untreated.
Billings went on to urge his followers to take skin checks seriously and get any suspicious spots or moles checked by a doctor. He said, I can’t stress enough how important it is to get any change on your skin checked out early. It’s not just for tanning beds or sun worshippers, it’s everyone.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) issued a statement in support of Billings, saying, We applaud Sam for speaking out about his experience and raising awareness of the importance of skin checks. We wish him all the best for a full and speedy recovery.
Billings, who has played 31 ODIs and 30 T20Is for England, is currently playing for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is expected to return to England in the coming weeks to prepare for the start of the domestic cricket season.
