Kilicdaroglu had pledged to advance democracy in Turkey and strengthen ties with the West. The United States and its allies had hoped that things would turn out in their favor, but they are now forced to deal with Erdogan, who has proven to be a difficult opponent for the West to overcome.

He has been openly interacting with Russia during the Ukraine conflict, so it’s no surprise that Russian President Putin was quick to congratulate his dear friend and attribute Erdogan’s success to the implementation of a free-range foreign policy.
Turkish influence in the region makes it difficult for the West to convince Erdogan to drop his opposition to Sweden’s NATO membership application. He has accused Stockholm of being soft on terrorist organizations that are antagonistic to Ankara and of not doing enough to put an end to demonstrations that involve burning the Quran.
The West’s efforts to geopolitically isolate Russia depend on Sweden’s admission to NATO, which must be unanimously approved by the member nations. However, as long as Erdogan is implacable, this won’t happen.
India is not helped by Turkey’s political stability because Erdogan has kept strong connections with China and Pakistan. Turkiye was one of the prominent omissions from the recent G20 Tourism Working Group conference in Kashmir.
India criticized Turkiye earlier this year for bringing up the Kashmir issue at the UN Human Rights Council just weeks after New Delhi launched Operation Dost to deliver help to the earthquake-devastated country. India and Turkey are both developing world powers that have Russia on their side. Both strategically and economically, they stand to gain a lot from one another. Their connections should be strengthened through their common interests.
