It is commendable that the Election Commission of India (ECI) managed the protracted polls largely without incident. West Bengal was an obvious exception, since there were skirmishes between TMC and BJP members, particularly in the unstable Sandeshkhali area.
It is noteworthy that the ECI instructed the Congress and the BJP to advise its prominent campaigners and candidates to abstain from remarks that would inflame tensions within the community. The poll panel did not, however, go so far as to publicly chastise the PM for his divisive April address in Banswara, Rajasthan.

Both political leaders engaged in a no-holds-barred campaign in which they had no qualms about undermining their opponents. For all parties involved—candidates, officials conducting the polls, campaigners, and voters—the heatwave that swept through many sections of the nation made everything more difficult. Nevertheless, the democratic dance went on undoubtedly in spite of the difficult circumstances.
A number of exit polls have shown that the BJP-led NDA will easily win a majority. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is confident that voters chose to re-elect the NDA government and reject the “regressive politics” of the “opportunistic” INDIA, despite the lower-than-expected turnout.
