BLACKPINK, the renowned K-pop girl band, performed for the first time at the MTV Video Music Awards presentation in New Jersey on August 28, 2022. Despite the fact that the band’s following, known as BLINK, had a good time, the prominent magazine Variety called out the female band and alleged that they lip-synced the songs in their performance. Not only that, but the prestigious magazine also referred to the musical trio as repeat offenders. BLACKPINK and a few of other musicians that performed at the awards event were called repeat offenders in a recent piece titled The Best and Worst Moments of the 2022 MTV VMAs by Variety author Thania Garcia. According to the magazine, as BLACKPINK members devoted focus to their amazing dance routines, they lip-synced their songs.Despite the author’s acknowledgement of the tricky profession and the amount of labour that goes into award presentations, fans were incensed by the magazine’s assertions. While some of them went on to accuse Variety for spreading false information, members of BLINK (BLACKPINK fanbase), one of the industry’s most popular fan groups, stated flatly that the magazine is doing it for clickbait and knows how the fans would respond. Many fans stepped up to defend their beloved K-pop group BLACKPINK, pointing out that the members, Jisoo, Rosu00e9, Jennie, and Lisa, did not lip sync their performance. Fans claimed to have heard the band members slamming their microphones and breathing into them. Several BLINK members also voiced their concerns and complaints in the article’s comments area, criticising the newspaper for their claims. True, BLACKPINK employed AR (All-Recorded), which is routinely used at award events to improve artists’ live performances. It is not, however, synonymous with lip-syncing. It’s basically pre-recorded back vocals with music in the background.Following this, many people pointed out that other artists listed by Variety, including Brazilian singer Anitta and rapper Flo Milli, did not lip-sync. Indeed, many upset fans flocked to Twitter to demand that Variety apologise for wrongly accusing BLACKPINK and the other artists of lip-syncing.Let us know what you think about this debacle in the comments below!
