The proprietor of the bar, staff members who served the minor alcohol, and the minor’s father have all been arrested on charges of willful neglect. This indicates that careless behaviour will not be tolerated.

The Crime Branch’s involvement by the Pune Police serves as evidence of how severe the situation is. The father’s case, along with the ones involving the bar owner and employees, highlights the need for greater accountability in averting similar disasters.

The Juvenile Justice Act’s charging of the father highlights the need of parental accountability in reducing risky behavior. But rather than being a fair punishment to a crime that resulted in two fatalities, the Juvenile Justice Board’s decision to give the youngster bail and place such light restrictions as writing an essay on road safety and attending counselling is just a slap on the wrist.

It also calls into question the reasoning behind certain jurisdictions’ 25-year-old drinking age for public alcohol and their 18-year-old voting and marriage restrictions for girls. The recent high-speed vehicle incident in Patiala that claimed the lives of four students serves as a warning sign for the alarming trend of young people driving recklessly.

These kinds of occurrences highlight the necessity of reviewing the legal frameworks for minor offenders and enforcing traffic regulations more strictly. Important progress has been made in this regard with the Pune Police’s request to try the youngster as an adult. Regardless of the age of the culprit, the legal system must act appropriately and establish a precedent of harsh penalties for such reckless behaviour. It will reestablish public trust and discourage careless driving on our roadways. Nothing less is appropriate for the victims and their families.
