Even though its partners in Europe and abroad are delighted that the far-right’s determined attempt to seize power has been stopped, political instability is the last thing France wants ahead of the major international event.
While Marine Le Pen’s National Rally was successfully repelled, President Emmanuel Macron’s and his centrist alliance’s positions have been undermined by the leftist New Popular Front (NFP)’s strong showing. The possibility of an NFP-led minority administration or a wide, uncomfortable coalition is very real now that no party has managed to secure a majority.

France’s standing in the EU is likely to be damaged by a disjointed parliament. The second-biggest economy in the Euro Zone is expected to face difficulties in reaching an agreement on a minimal domestic agenda. The message to Macron is very clear: not all segments of the electorate are fond of his reforms.
The economic plan of the Left calls for tens of billions of euros in public spending, some of which would come from wealth taxes. It is anticipated that the NFP will be burdened by the tugs and pulls from its potential allies. For the time being, there is a bright side: France has stopped the far right’s advance. The world has been led by a nation established on the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity.

The French voter has done a commendable job of preserving the nation’s democratic credentials. A majority for Le Pen’s party would have dealt a serious geopolitical blow to the West in the midst of the conflict in Ukraine.
The US-led NATO would have faced more challenges if France had taken a more accommodating approach toward Moscow and maybe reduced its military assistance to Kyiv. It appears that everything has been avoided, but Paris still requires a solid administration. That would serve the best interests of Europe, the world at large, and France specifically.
