A truce is necessary to prevent a humanitarian disaster. Even though Hamas and hospital workers are in denial, the Israeli army has attacked the Al Shifa Hospital in an attempt to identify Hamas officials and uncover tunnels that it alleges are beneath the facility.
The leader of Hamas has declared that the Palestinians are capable of withstanding the Israeli assault. Israel also refuses to give in until the Israelis whom Hamas has been holding captive are freed. Regretfully, Israel, supported by the United States, an ally, is determined to violate international humanitarian law.

Tensions need to be de-escalated immediately due to the rapidly deteriorating circumstances. In order to provide relief and care for those injured in combat as well as hospital patients, a protracted break or truce is required. Gaza’s refugee camps have also experienced attacks, and they are pleading for assistance.
The fact that food, drinkable water, medication, and fuel supplies in the conflict zones are rapidly running low poses a threat to worsen the situation. Human Rights Watch worries that if help is not provided promptly, cholera and typhoid may spread. There needs to be international pressure on Hamas to release the captives and force both sides to announce a truce.
