I wish the team the best of luck, said Reid, who arrived in India in April 2019.
Reid led Indian hockey to its biggest victory in 41 years in Tokyo, where Manpreet Singh’s team finished third for the first time since winning gold in Moscow in 1980. However, the World Cup was a huge disappointment for India, as they failed to even make the quarter-finals, losing in the crossovers to New Zealand.
India then won classification matches against Japan and South Africa to finish joint ninth, the lowest finish by a host nation at the World Cup. Argentina in Buenos Aires in 1978, Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur in 2002, and India in New Delhi in 2010.
Reid addressed the team and support staff on Friday evening after submitting his resignation to HI president Dilip Tirkey. Many players were taken aback. He led us to our best result in 41 years, which proves he’s a good coach, a team member said on the condition of anonymity.
Reid told the players that if he couldn’t deliver results, it was time to move on, and the players bid the Australian farewell.
On Monday morning, the Indian team’s analytical coach Greg Clark and scientific advisor Mitchell David Pemberton both resigned. All three will serve their notice periods over the course of the next month.
Tirkey met with the players and support staff, along with HI secretary general Bholanath Singh, to understand and analyse the team’s performance and strategy for the future.
India will always be grateful to Reid and his team of support staff who have brought good results to the country, particularly in the Olympics, Tirkey, a former India captain, said after accepting the resignations. As all journeys progress to different stages, it is now time for us to embark on a new path for our team.
