I have the highest regard for Paaji (Tendulkar). He has made me feel so at ease. We grew close because of that comfort, and I believe he enjoyed my company as well. Then I began speaking to him in Punjabi, and we both enjoyed talking to each other.
I always go to him for advice when I need it. I spoke with him before joining the Rajya Sabha. He told me that I was getting a chance to serve my country and that I should only commit if I could devote enough time to the job. That was sound advice, in my opinion.
This is my new innings; I don’t know how long it will last, only that I do it well, Harbhajan Singh told The Indian Express during an Idea Exchange session. When asked about his transition from cricket to politics, Harbhajan stated that his time in parliament has been a learning experience.
It’s a completely different field for me. I played cricket for about 20 years and loved every minute of it. Today, I am who I am because of the game. I was even given the MP seat because I am Harbhajan Singh, the cricketer. I’m still very new to politics and trying to figure out how things work.
Being in Parliament, meeting the big people of our country, the decision-makers, is an experience; sharing my knowledge, getting to know their minds in a variety of different aspects of life, and what is going on in India is obviously a big learning.
The more time I devote to it, the more I try to learn from various people. I try to keep as much track as I can of these political agendas, what is happening in India, and try to raise the same issues in Parliament, as well as what has recently happened in Delhi with the mayor and stuff, and BJP and AAP, Harbhajan explained.
When asked about the clashes in the MCD House following the mayor election, Harbhajan stated that ‘it was not the right thing to do’. Shelly Oberoi of the Aam Aadmi Party was elected mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday.
Whatever happened there isn’t a good thing and it’s not a good sight for people of any country watching the proceedings. It’s not the right thing to do, and there are many people watching you. This type of behavior is unacceptable regardless of political party. You can sit down and talk to solve problems.
But if we take this approach, it will simply continue to swing back and forth. I’m too young to say what’s right or wrong, but problems can be solved by sitting down and talking about them. People from both sides must come forward and put their pride aside to do so.
They must find the best solution, and I believe this can be accomplished quickly.
