New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult, who had announced his retirement from ODI cricket in 2020, has expressed his desire to play in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. Boult, who is currently playing for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL), stated that he has a big desire to be a part of the New Zealand team in the tournament.
Speaking to the media, Boult said, I have retired from ODI cricket, but I am still playing T20 cricket and Test cricket. It’s obviously a big event (the World Cup), and there’s a big desire there to be a part of that group. So, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
Boult had played a crucial role in New Zealand’s run to the final of the ICC ODI World Cup 2019, where they lost to England in a thrilling super over finish. However, he had decided to retire from ODI cricket after the tournament to focus on T20s and Tests.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead had earlier hinted that Boult could make a comeback to the ODI side if required. Stead had said, There’s a lot of water to go under the bridge before we get to the next World Cup. Trent’s been a fantastic servant of New Zealand cricket, and if we need him to play in the 50-over format, we’ll certainly consider that.
The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is scheduled to be held in India in October-November of that year. New Zealand will be looking to go one better than their performance in 2019 and win their first-ever ODI World Cup title. With Boult expressing his desire to be a part of the squad, the team’s chances of success are likely to receive a major boost.
