This has received a strong backlash as the curfews are very restrictive for female students, not only in Kerala but accross the country. Male students on the other hand, do not face any such restrictions or curfews and can avail all the facilities till late night and so.
In a statement, the Kerela High Court made, it stated that Female students are very well capable of taking care of themselves and if not so then it is the responsibility of the administration to provide security to the female students. It further made a statement along the lines, patriarchy is being imposed in the name of security and the society should move forward and not backward, in light of the events.https://youtu.be/7SMEKsE510MIn interviews with the outraged students, it was clear that this was a discriminatory practice against females by denying them basic facilities while their male counterparts enjoyed all kinds of freedom. The students stated that the libraries remained open till 11.30 pm and it was nonsensical for them to return at 9.30 pm just because of the curfew. They also stated that being medical students, late night studies are a part of their routine and this imposition of the curfew simply takes away their access to food and other necessities.
Being locked away in campus in the name of security is a futile attempt to keep the female students safe. The students feel that security should be increased and it is the responsibility of the administration to look into the matter instead of caging the female students. What is your take, let us know in the comments..
