The supporters’ reason for criticizing the BCCI is ‘cost-cutting.’ Yes, you read that correctly. The fans are furious that India did not send Shreyas Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi, who were named to India’s T20 World Cup reserves list, to Australia.
According to a PTI report, the selectors have asked Iyer and Bishnoi to play in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for their respective states of Mumbai and Rajasthan in order to stay match-fit.
It’s an odd decision because both players were named to the standby list for a reason. Bishnoi was chosen as Yuzvendra Chahal’s backup, with Iyer being the only specialist batter on the reserves list.
Deepak Chahar and Mohammed Shami, both fast bowlers, were also on the initial standby list. While Chahar is out with a back injury and will be replaced by Shardul Thakur, Shami is set to replace Jasprit Bumrah in the main squad.
Instead of flying reserve players to Australia, the BCCI has sent several net bowlers to assist the batters with their preparations, including Mohammed Siraj, Chetan Sakariya, and Saurabh Kumar.
I have nothing against the BCCI requiring players to participate in domestic T20 competitions. I agree that it could be a good way for them to prepare for a match.
But don’t forget about the stark difference in playing surfaces between India and Australia.
The BCCI has taken a huge risk by not sending them, and it could come back to haunt them badly at the T20 World Cup.
Not to mention that both players were deemed surplus to the team’s needs after being placed on the reserves list. This type of treatment can greatly boost a player’s confidence.
