In a recent interview, Liam Livingstone, the middle-order batsman for Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), expressed his dislike for the term anchor in cricket.
Livingstone said that he believes that every player approaches the game differently and has their own unique style, and therefore labeling someone as an anchor can be limiting and unfair.
I don’t like the term ‘anchor’ as it doesn’t give justice to how differently everyone approaches the game. Everyone has their own unique style, and I think labeling someone as an anchor can be limiting, Livingstone said.
Livingstone, who has been in fine form in the ongoing IPL 2023 season, added that he prefers to approach his innings in a positive and aggressive manner, rather than trying to hold up one end.
I like to play my natural game, which is to be aggressive and positive. I think that’s the best way to approach the game, and it’s important to trust your instincts and back yourself, he said.
Livingstone’s comments come at a time when many cricket pundits and analysts have been discussing the importance of having a solid anchor in the middle order, especially in limited-overs cricket.
However, Livingstone believes that every player should be allowed to play to their strengths, rather than being forced into a certain role or label.
I think it’s important to let everyone play to their strengths and not try to fit them into a certain role or label. Cricket is a team sport, and everyone has a role to play in contributing to the team’s success, he added.
Livingstone’s Punjab Kings are currently in the middle of the IPL 2023 season, and are looking to make a push for the playoffs with some strong performances in their upcoming matches.
