As the T20 World Cup 2024 intensifies, Scotland’s opener Michael Jones injected humor into the pre-match discussions by suggesting that it would be hilarious if David Warner opened the bowling for Australia in their upcoming match against Scotland. Jones’ comments come amid light-hearted banter and strategic mind games between teams as they vie for a place in the Super 8 stage

Jones welcomed Australian bowler Josh Hazelwood’s recent remarks, where Hazelwood jokingly suggested that Australia might take it easy on Scotland to affect England’s net-run-rate. “I was watching it live actually, laughing to myself,” Jones shared with the Press Association. “I watched that interview and I watched Tim Paine when he was saying they should field half a side. I’m not particularly close to them, I don’t know any of the Australian players, but it would be good if we could have a little word and sort something out.”

Hazelwood’s comments came after Australia’s decisive victory over Namibia, where he hinted at the possibility of “dragging it” against Scotland to potentially knock England out of the tournament. However, Australian captain Mitchell Marsh faces a one-match ban if there is any manipulation of the match outcome against Scotland.

Jones humorously suggested, “The rivalry between England and Australia is massive. If they want to play that way then happy days. We won’t be complaining. If they want to let David Warner open the bowling or something like that it would be pretty funny.”

The Scottish team seems to be enjoying the banter between their arch-rivals England and Australia as they prepare for their crucial match at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia on June 16. Former Australian captain Tim Paine’s remarks added to the light-hearted atmosphere, suggesting that “the Australian team should go for a holiday and the England team should pack their bags.”

Scotland’s position in the Super 8 stage depends on their performance against Australia, especially after England boosted their net-run-rate with an 8-wicket win over Oman. Jones remains eager for the challenge, stating, “At the end of the day our team wants the best result we can get, but on a personal level you want to challenge yourself against the best.”

He added, “The Australians are renowned for being extremely diligent and extremely professional. I’m absolutely certain they will come out all guns blazing like they do for every game at every tournament. I almost hope they do go full strength on Saturday and we can show the cricket world we’re up to the challenge.”

As the anticipation builds, cricket fans worldwide are looking forward to a thrilling encounter, spiced with a touch of humor and friendly rivalry.
