With the BJP, the very party he severed connections with a year and a half ago, the head of the Janata Dal (United) has established the government. His most recent U-turn has shocked not only the Mahagathbandhan, which is made up of the Congress, the Left Front, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), but also INDIA, the opposition group that was established last year to challenge the BJP in the general election of 2024.

Nitish was incensed over suggestions that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge be named India’s prime ministerial candidate, despite the fact that he had positioned himself as the face of the alliance.Although Nitish has always switched allies, in the last ten years, he has done it more frequently.

“Mitti mein mil jaayenge magar BJP ke saath nahi jayenge,” the speaker once said Nitish has once again opportunistically mended fences with the saffron party in an attempt to endure and prosper. His choice demonstrates that he is betting on the BJP to win and India to have a disastrous General Election.

He is also making a last-ditch effort to revitalise his party, which fared poorly in the 2020 Assembly election compared to the RJD and the BJP. Even though the BJP will be in charge of the new Bihar administration, it would be difficult for the party to defend Nitish’s return to the NDA when he previously said he wouldn’t be joining it.

Nitish appears to have given up on becoming prime minister, but India is still getting further and deeper into the mud. The discord surrounding seat-sharing in West Bengal and Punjab has revealed the weaknesses within the alliance. The fact that Nitish crossed over suggests that as the Lok Sabha elections get closer, other opposition leaders may decide to defect.
