After surviving two close leg before wicket calls off Nathan Lyon early in the morning, one of which was only due to him stepping down the 3m mark, Gill went on to make the most of his lifelines, reaching fifty off 90 deliveries.
This came after India lost Rohit Sharma earlier in the day when he was caught at short cover attempting a back foot punch off Matthew Kuhnemann. Gill then combined with Cheteshwar Pujara to add 113 runs for the second wicket, with the latter scoring 42 off 121 deliveries in another grit-filled knock following a hard-fought fifty in the second innings of the Indore Test.
With Pujara removed by Todd Murphy, India would enter the final session of the day with Virat Kohli joining their centurion in the middle. Australia had been bowled out for 480 in their first innings earlier on day two, despite centuries from Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green.
