Gill, who made his Test debut against Australia in 2020, has played 25 Test matches and 46 innings, amassing 1492 runs at an average of 35.521. Despite his promising start, Gill acknowledges that he has yet to fully meet the high expectations placed upon him.

In a recent interview, Gill credited his improved defensive techniques for his recent success in the home series against England, where he scored 452 runs. “I worked on my defence a little bit more, especially against the spinners,” Gill said. “If you’re playing on a turning track, you should be able to defend a lot more, then you play your scoring shots. I feel it [batting-friendly tracks in white-ball games] takes away a little bit of your defensive game over a period of time. So that was my focus in the England series”

Currently, Gill is leading the India A side in the Duleep Trophy. Although his performance in the first innings was modest, scoring 25 runs from 43 balls, he remains a key figure in the team2. His leadership and experience are expected to be invaluable as India A aims for success in the tournament.

India’s upcoming schedule is packed, with a two-match Test series and three T20Is against Bangladesh from September 19 to October 12, followed by a three-match Test series against New Zealand from October 16 to November 52. These matches will be crucial for Gill as he aims to solidify his place in the Test squad and prepare for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year.

Gill is aware of the challenges ahead but remains hopeful. “Yes, definitely, I haven’t reached my expectations yet,” he admitted. “But we have ten Test matches ahead of us back-to-back. So hopefully after these ten Test matches, I will be able to meet my expectations”

As India prepares for a busy cricketing season, Shubman Gill’s form and confidence will be pivotal. Fans and selectors alike will be watching closely, hoping that the young prodigy can turn his potential into consistent performances and help India achieve success on the international stage.
