In his new role, Chawla will oversee critical areas including the comprehensive review of the Income Tax Act, rationalization of Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates, and the review of customs duties. His appointment comes just weeks before the presentation of the Union Budget, positioning him to play a pivotal role in shaping India’s fiscal policies.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has also assigned Chawla the additional charge of Secretary in the Ministry of Culture until a regular appointment is made.
This strategic appointment is expected to enhance the Ministry of Finance’s efforts in tax collection, digital transformation, and policy implementation, contributing to India’s economic growth and stability.
