In regulation time, India’s Vivek Sagar Prasad (2nd minute) and Sukhjeet Singh (47th minute) scored, while Australia’s Nathan Ephraums (37th and 52nd minute) scored twice.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, and Dilpreet Singh all scored in the shootout to cap off India’s home campaign in style. India won both double-leg matches against world champions Germany, 3-2 and 6-3, and defeated world number four Australia 5-4 in the first leg match on Sunday.
India jumped out to an early lead, earning a penalty corner in the second minute. Johan Durst, the Australian goalkeeper, padded away Captain Harmanpreet’s powerful drag-flick. However, the rebound was brilliantly picked up by Vivek Sagar Prasad, who took a successful shot on goal from the top of the circle.
Vivek was playing his 100th international match for India. India created a couple of more PCs in the following minutes of the first quarter, putting Australia on the back foot, but could not capitalise on the opportunity.
After a scoreless second quarter, Nathan Ephraums converted a penalty stroke in the 37th minute to give Australia a 1-0 lead. India took the lead again ten minutes later, in the 47th minute, when Sukhjeet converted a field goal.
However, an unintentional foul by an Indian defender in the 52nd minute gave Australia a crucial penalty corner, which they converted with skill. Anand Gupte faked a drag-flick and passed the ball to Tim Howard, who put it between the posts.
With the scores tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation, both teams entered a tense shootout.
