In West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) won all four seats, while the Congress won two each in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The DMK secured the Vikravandi seat in Tamil Nadu, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the Jalandhar West seat in Punjab.

In Bihar, an independent candidate secured a seat, while the BJP secured one seat each in Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The Congress is encouraged by its wins in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, as the party was soundly defeated by the BJP in both states during the Lok Sabha elections.

The AAP, which was under pressure after winning just three seats out of thirteen in the Punjab legislative election, is also affected. For the time being, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, and Bhagwant Mann, his counterpart, may relax. The ruling parties in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, the TMC and DMK, respectively, have solidified their positions.

After failing to secure a majority in the Lower House on its own, the BJP now faces more setbacks as a result of the defeats. The party is in power in Uttarakhand and won a landslide victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, so these reversals are especially noteworthy there.

The results of the by-election bode well for the Opposition, which is on the rise again and was evident in the most recent Parliamentary session. With Assembly elections scheduled for later this year in Haryana and Maharashtra, India hopes to upend the BJP applecart there.

The opposition camp should not become complacent, though, as the saffron party has a history of winning elections despite overwhelming odds. To identify where it is going wrong and how to change direction, the BJP needs to conduct an honest self-evaluation.
